1. Ukraine crisis

The turmoil is the “biggest crisis” to face Europe in the 21st Century.

 

 

Russia’s military has given Ukrainian forces in Crimea until dawn to surrender or face an assault.

The head of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet Aleksander Vitko set the deadline and threatened an attack “across Crimea”. However Russian media have denied the deadline has been issued.

Western powers have condemned Moscow’s decision to send troops as a “violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty”.

Reuters reports that the European Union has agreed to consider “targeted measures” against Russia if Moscow fails to de-escalate rising tensions in Ukraine.

Ukraine has ordered full mobilisation to counter the intervention.

Meanwhile British Foreign Secretary William Hague has warned that the turmoil is the “biggest crisis” to face Europe in the 21st Century.

Urging dialogue between the two nations to lower tensions, he hinted Russia’s G8 membership could be under threat.

2. Oscar Pistorius

Pistorius’s trial has begun

The trial of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, has begun in South Africa.

The first witness to give evidence, Michelle Burger, said she and her husband were awoken at around 3am by “bloodcurdling screams’’ coming from the Pistorius home in an up-market Johannesburg gated community.

3. Brother of alleged Gold Coast bus attackers speaks

The brother of a woman accused of assaulting an elderly indigenous man on a Gold Coast bus has come to his sister’s defence, claiming that she is now a victim.

4. Qantas

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has rejected Qantas’ plea for a debt guarantee saying he “did not believe in government by chequebook’’.

He has however announced that Federal Cabinet has backed the wholesale repeal of the airline’s ownership limits, meaning there would be no requirement that the national carrier stay in Australian hands.

5. Corby may lose bail

Schapelle may have bail revoked

Schapelle Corby may have her bail revoked, according to Indonesia’s Justice Minister.

After viewing the story which appeared on the Seven Network’s Sunday Night, Amir Syamsuddin has revealed he will make a decision within days.

“I am waiting for a complete report from the Bali Corrections Board, and in the meantime I’d like to announce that there’s a possibility I will revoke Corby’s parole,” Fairfax Media reported the Minister as saying.

6. Aussie jailed in Bali

A West Australian woman Julie Anne Joseph has been sentenced to eight months in jail after being found with 0.9 grams of methamphetamine in her handbag on the island of Lombok in October last year.

Judge Bagus Irawan said Joseph had a child under five whom she missed and wanted to be with.

Prosecutors had demanded a one-year sentence.

7. It’s getting hotter

The biannual climate report released today by the CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology has said the nation’s average temperatures have increased by almost 1C during the past century, with seven of the 10 hottest years occurring since 1998.

The report said. “There has been an increase in extreme fire weather, and a longer fire season, across large parts of Australia.”

The report also states that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached its highest level in two million years, and in the past two years has actually reached some of the highest levels ever observed.

8. War-Zone selfies

Look at me I’m in a near war-zone!

Hard to believe but people in Crimea have been captured taking selfies with Russian masked gunmen as Ukraine is on the brink of war.

In one photograph captioned ‘sweetest guys’ a woman stands alongside a soldier armed with a gun.

In another a mother smiles intently for the camera with her two children while posing next to an armed guard.

The pictures have appeared on Instagram.

9. Tragic train accident

A teenage girl has had both her feet severed after being hit by a train in Perth yesterday.

The 16-year-old girl was hit by the train when she tried to cross train lines.

The teenager was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for emergency surgery.

10. Tooth decay

It seems the health of our children’s teeth is declining with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reporting that there has been a gradual increase since 2000 with two in three 12 year olds having tooth decay in their permanent teeth.

11. Flexible working hours as viewed by men

A study revealed in the News Limited papers today has shown that the majority of women in the nation’s workforce believe the men they work with don’t agree with flexible working hours.

The study showed that 79 per cent of Australian women do not feel comfortable knowing their male colleagues doubted their maternity leave.

12. Robbed while in labour

In the US two men have been arrested and charged for robbing a pregnant woman while she was in labour.

The woman was held at gunpoint in Annapolis, Maryland, early on Sunday morning, according to WBAL-TV.

Police said the gunmen fled in a stolen vehicle, throwing a handgun out as they drove. The pregnant woman was taken to a nearby hospital.

13. Etihad wipes Israel off the map

Etihad is under fire for wiping Israel off its inflight maps completely.

The airline, owned by the United Arab Emirates, has an official travel-route map that shows all surrounding countries, including Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus — but not the Jewish state or its major cities.
