Purple Wiggle Lachy shares why he and Yellow Wiggle Emma kept their relationship a secret.

While Lachy Gillespie and Emma Watkins are now widely adored as the favourite couple of every toddler (and adult), the pair kept their relationship a secret for two years before sharing it with the public in 2015.

Now, speaking to Kate Waterhouse for Date with Kate, Purple Wiggle Lachy, 31, has shared why he thought it was necessary to keep his romance with Emma private for so long. Essentially, he didn’t want anyone to think it was a publicity stunt.

“We thought it was a respectful thing to do,” said Lachy.

“There is nothing worse … if you’ve only just only started in a world-class organisation such as The Wiggles and then all of a sudden we come out that we are together … We didn’t want people to think we were just doing it for [publicity].”

Emma, 27, added, “We didn’t officially say to anyone, but they knew. Anthony knew, definitely!”

When they did decide to share their relationship with the public, Emma said it was “getting to the point where we were like, ‘we probably want to share it.'”

“Though at the time I didn’t know that Lachy had planned to propose,” she added. “So … our relationship was announced, and then, about a month and a half later, our engagement. So everyone was like: whoa, whoa. For us, it felt like quite a while.”

While Lachy asked Emma to marry him in May 2015, he had actually been planning to propose for over a year. He told Daily Mail Australia that he bought a ring on tour in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2014.

Waterhouse also asked the couple about how their romance blossomed in The Wiggles, with Emma joking that she “really fell in love with Lachy in the first moment … But it took him a long time!”

Lachy responded, “No, I knew we had a connection right from the start … In 2012, we basically spent the entire year together, every single day.”

The pair were married in Bowral in April of this year, surrounded by friends and family, and, of course, their fellow Wiggles.
