Never before has a pair of overalls caused so much drama! On Saturday, Justin Bieber tweeted a picture of himself receiving the Diamond Jubilee Medal from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper — but his fashion choice soon led to widespread criticism in Canada and abroad.
In the photo, Justin is wearing a backwards baseball cap, sneakers and unbuttoned denim overalls, while the PM is wearing the expected suit and tie. "I met the Prime Minister in overalls lol," wrote Bieber, 18. He also posted a picture of his outfit to Instagram, with the caption "I hope you hate my style." Should the pop star have shown his home country a little more respect by dressing up for the Prime Minister?
Some people certainly think so. After seeing the photos, comments like "honestly, show some damn respect to people" next to more supportive ones like "I'm so proud of you."
But as it turns out, Bieber had a pretty good explanation for his attire. In a post on Webstagram, the "Girlfriend" singer responded to the Daily Mail article by journalist Hayley Peterson, explaining that the meeting with Harper was scheduled during his rehearsal time. "The pic of me and the Prime Minister was taken in a room in the arena where i was performing at that day," wrote Bieber. "I walked straight from my meet and greet to him, if you 'Hayley' expect me to have a change of clothes let a loan a suit at that specific time that's crazy."
"It wasn't like it was like I was going into his environment we were at a hockey arena," he added. "Wow am i ever white trash hayley peterson lol ."
Okay, honestly? We're thinking that if Justin Bieber wanted to meet the Prime Minister in a suit, he could have snapped his fingers and had a suit sent to his dressing room. On the other hand, the Canadian government did arrange the meeting in a hockey arena, which doesn't scream "formalwear." Besides, Bieber is still a teenager, which means he can still get away with this kind of thing. In a couple years, it won't seem so cute!
As for Prime Minister Harper, he seemed to take the singer's casual dress in stride. "In fairness to @justinbieber," Harper tweeted on Saturday, "I told him I would be wearing my overalls too."
