Discovery of Lithium
Dr. Doug Stewart
Lithium was discovered by Johan Arfvedson in 1817, during an enquiry of petalite
(LiAlSi4O10).

He create the petalite contained “silica, alumina and an alkali.” (1)

The recent alkali metal in the petalite had peerless properties.

It required more acid to undo it than sodium and its carbonate was only sparingly soluble in o – unalike sodium carbonate.

The changed alkali differed from potassium because it did not recite a hasty with tartaric acid.

Arfvedson tried to beget a sterling swatch of the recent metal close to electrolysis, but he was unfruitful; the battery he occupied was not energetic enough. (2)

The sanitary metal was secret the following year nearby both William Brande and Humphry Davy working independently.

Davy obtained a short volume of lithium metal by electrolysis of lithium carbonate. (3)

He noted the modish ingredient had a red heartthrob color somewhat like strontium and produced an alkali d俷ouement when dissolved in water.

In days less safety-conscious than the show, Brande said of lithium, “its fluid tastes acrid like the other persistent alkalies.” (4)

By 1855 Robert Bunsen and Augustus Matthiessen were independently producing the metal in hefty quantities by electrolysis of molten lithium chloride.

Lithium’s name is derived from the Greek word ‘lithos’ meaning, ‘stone.’
