The post in which I come to absolutely no conclusion.

I sat through the full 4 hours of Janine Hosking’s Schapelle Corby documentary on channel 9 on Sunday night and last night. It was an extraordinary film, made over four years and with unprecedented access to all the main players including interviews with Schapelle filmed secretly in Kerobokan prison.

And after the four hours? I was totally baffled. At various times when I was watching, I decided conclusively that:
a) the drugs belonged to her younger brother who was travelling with her
b) she knew the drugs were in the bag
c) she didn’t know the drugs were there
d) the Corby family are an interesting bunch….
e) Mercedes is nuts
f) Mercedes is smart
g) Ron Bakir had a God-complex and stuffed the case
h) Ron Bakir was just trying to do the right thing
i) Robin Tampoe was very sensible
j) Robin Tampoe was very unprofessional to trash the family and his own defence
k) the Balinese legal system is a joke

….and this was all just in the first hour.

One thing that did stick with me though is how Schapelle’s tone and words did not change once in the four years. She was remarkably consistent in her protest that she was innocent and that she knew nothing about the drugs in her bag. Mercedes was also very consistent.

There’s no doubt that the whole thing is an utter mess. Remember how much we all cared when she was sentenced? I remember in 2005 having all my staff into my office to watch the verdict live on TV. Some people cried. Everyone was shocked.
And now? People barely care.

Whether she did it or not, she shouldn’t be in that hell-hole of a prison anymore. She’s done 4 years for a crime she may not have committed. And whatever way you look at it, dozens of lives have been affected terribly by the aftermath of what’s happened. From the lawyers to her family, maybe I’m naive but it seemed to me that everyone really did care about her.
WHAT. A. MESS.

And the thought she might have another 16 years to go? Imagine that…..
