There's always been something a little magical about The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Maybe it's because the series, which is now in its fifth and final season on Prime Video, is set in a time that allows the audience to indulge in a touch of old-world glamour as it whirls through the late 1950s and early 1960s in New York City.

It's also very much to do with the series boasting a storyline and a script that moves at breakneck speed, brimming with charm and charisma, while also leaving you wondering how human beings can actually talk this fast.

Of course, this is because The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is created by the one and only Amy Sherman-Palladino, and co-executive produced with her husband, Daniel Palladino. A creative duo who are very much known for delivering beloved TV shows packed with warmth and wit, such as everyone's go-to comfort show Gilmore Girls, and the short-lived but critically acclaimed Bunheads

Take a look at the trailer for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season five on Prime Video. Post continues below.

When we first met the marvelous Miriam "Midge" Maisel herself (played Rachel Brosnahan, who has won multiple Emmys, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards for the role) she was a young housewife and mother of two living on Manhattan's Upper West Side with social engagements and a strict beauty regime taking up the majority of her time.

When her husband Joel Maisel (Michael Zegen) had a bit of a life crisis and left her for his secretary, she found herself (after a slightly drunken night) on-stage doing a stand-up comedy routine and this moment opened up a whole new world and career for her.

Fast forward five seasons and we're now following the story of a very different Midge Maisel, a character we have followed through soaring career highs and drastic professional lows (honestly, the end of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season three is still the most devastated I've ever felt for a fictional character).

It's been fascinating to watch Midge navigate her career in season five, as in the past we've seen her battling to score a spot on stage and then touring her act. Now she's in the writers' room on a late-night talk show, and the dynamics of her navigating this fast-paced (and often sexist) environment have given the show a welcoming freshness in its final season.

Now we're left wondering, will Midge's writer's room gamble actually pay off and allow her to perform on the show? And what will become of her relationship with the show's host Gordon Ford?

The true power of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is that the cast is the very definitional of all killer, no filler. As every one of them is complex and endearing enough to be the lead of their own series if the occasion called for it.

In season five we have Susie Myerson (played by Alex Borstein in her Emmy-winning role) finally living out her dream of being a talent manager, and the fiery yet hilarious dynamic between her and Midge continues to be the beating heart of the series. But as Susie's talent empire begins to expand, an old threat continues to loom over her head. It's left us wondering if this particular debt will ever be paid off?

In the same vein, Midge's mother Rose Weissman (Marin Hinkle) has also drastically changed her life since we first met her as a society wife in season one. Rose's career as a matchmaker for New York's wealthy singles has really taken off. Season five has given Gilmore Girls fans a true gift with her nemesis and rival matchmaker Benedetta played by none other than Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore herself).

But as the threats and strange occurrences against Rose and her family begin to escalate, the question we're looking at now is how far are the other matchmakers willing to take this war?

And when it comes to Joel Maisel, his story arc has been one of the most surprising of all. A character who could have been easily written off as the slimy cheating ex-husband has instead become one of Midge's closest allies (and sometimes lover), his personal loss this season has offered up a moment of quiet humanity for the show in amongst the more glitzy showbiz scenes.

But thanks to an argument that led to a kiss with Midge, Joel's relationship with his ex-wife, and his parents looming divorce, has left us wondering how he will find his way to a happy ending?

Along with all the fashion, romance, and comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel delivers, the storytelling stakes are higher than ever before with the iconic show's fifth and final season.

With only a handful of episodes left to go, we've been treated to some flash-forward scenes that have given us a glimpse of where are our favourite characters are decades into the future.

A storytelling device that has left us desperate to know how one of the central characters ended up in jail, how Midge's career took such a turn, and how one of the most important relationships in the series appears to be broken beyond repair.

If you have yet to watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, or have fallen behind on the latest season, then "tits up" (as Midge and Susie always say before a show) and rectify that immediately because the award-winning series is building to a finale that you won't want to miss.

With its warm tone, chaotic family dynamics, flashy showbiz storylines, and Midge's unrivalled collection of hats there has never been a show you need to watch immediately quite like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and I'm going to miss it terribly.
