Being in my 30s I feel like I’ve worn almost every single wash and type of jean there is. There were black jeans during my Emo phase in high school, bootleg jeans in the 90s, skinny jeans for most of the 00s, and loose boyfriend jeans during my post-baby body phase, which has already lasted three years…
Anyways, the point is I’m at a denim crossroads. I can no longer wear low-cut, bum-showing skinny jeans. Black jeans don’t feel right, and nor is dressing like a teenage boy in baggy jeans particularly appealing.
Then I spotted the exact pair I was after. Problem was, they were on a person I was driving past, which made it a little difficult to ask where she got them. But I’ve found the next best thing, a pair at Target that only cost $20. And that’s not even the cheapest pair, you can pick up a pair for $10!
These are the cheapest jeans I’ve ever bought, and remarkably similar to a Sass & Bide pair I bought for nearly 10 times* the price a decade ago. My $20 bargains are a classic denim blue, straight-legged, high-waisted but not in that too high-waisted way that might give you camel-toe or a ‘mum tum’ or be uncomfortable post-burger.
I’ve only worn them a few times but so far they have washed really well and haven’t faded or stretched. I may never buy expensive designer jeans again.

This is great. I'm a big DJs fan and and have always bought jeans there (Mavi are always a good fit and sort of affordable at about $130). I'm still in shock for when I paid over $300 for a pair of J brand khakis - also now available at Target for a third of the price. My daughter (11) wanted skinny jeans from Target. $10 a pair! They look fantastic on her so I checked out the grown-ups jean dept - absolutely mind boggling quantities of jeans of every shape and size for $40 or less. And no struggle to find a change room.....
I'm asking myself why do I want to pay more for the same product just because of advertising's insidious influence? It's not like the smaller brands are exploiting their workers any less than the ones with enormous output. In fact I'd hazard a guess and say it's the larger companies who provide better working conditions and pay.
We all have to wear clothes, fashion is fun (including when you're over 50 like me) and as many of your stories indicate it's people's ingenuity and creativity that can make a low cost outfit look a million bucks without the outlay!
Are these really stretchy. I find a lot of the cheaper brands way too stretchy and just bunch up under my bum. Not a good look.
Love my $20 Big W 7/8 skinny jeans. I'm short so they're the perfect length. They are beginning to get thread bare though, I'm afraid I'll split them one day & be walking around with my arse out!!
