The 5 mistakes people make when choosing a name

I knew early on that he was going to be a boy so that cut about 50%, okay 40% of the names off my list but still there were so many choices.

I liked Bailey but I worked at the time with someone whose surname was Bailey so let’s just say that was out of the question.

I loved Jason, Jackson, Justin, Jordan, Jonah, Judd and any other name that began with a J*

I really liked the name Alex but I knew an Alex once and the last time I saw him he was in rehab

I liked the names Stuart, Chris, Devon, Oscar, Ryan and Dylan but I had been a teacher in a previous life and I had taught boys with these names and er, I didn’t want to go there.

When he was born and they rushed him off to intensive care they asked for his name. My husband confidently replied “Ethan”.

I loved the name when I heard it tumble out of his mouth and I still do. I think it’s strong, simple and suits him perfectly. In fact I can’t think of a more perfect name for him. But apparently I’m lucky. An article in news.com.au recently reported:

…almost one in 10 couples want a do-over when it comes to naming their kids, according to a new survey.

Yourbabydomainname.com found an alarming regret rate of 8 per cent, and common mistakes include succumbing to naming fads and stubbornly following through on long-held dream names.

“It’s sad there are parents who feel the names they gave to their children perhaps don’t hold such a special meaning,” said survey spokesman Wayne Bloore.

The top names to avoid

Boys: Beckham, Axl, Kai, Kester, Jordan, Joaquim

Girls: Apple, Chardonnay, Peaches, Madonna

According to nameberry.com the 5 mistakes people make when naming their babies are:

  1. They go to the Social Security list and try to deconstruct it
  2. They are afraid to tell anyone their name ideas
  3. They fight with their spouses about names
  4. They anticipate initials, nicknames and teasing potential but misjudge the name’s rhythm
  5. They overthink the decision

*His middle name is Jay

Are you happy with your name? Your children’s name? Do you have any ideas about what you would like to call your future children?

Anything you have to tell people how to spell is going to be a pain for the kid. Especially if it's something that sounds normal, but has a funkied up spelling... "no, it's Jayson with a silent P" :-)
My maiden name sounded like a famous sports locale, and I hated always having to tell people it was spelled differently. I love my nice, ordinary, boring married name!
