4. Mother pleads for late term abortion in Victoria as she is 26 weeks along.
A woman in Victoria has spoken of how she will cope if she is denied an abortion saying she is suicidal.
The un-named mother, who is 26 weeks pregnant to a healthy foetus, says she has no ability to cope with a baby as her life is in a”diabolical state” and she has a troubled teenager she is finding difficult to cope with.
The woman has told that she tried to have an abortion at 13 weeks pregnant at the Royal Women’s Hospital but was told they had no appointments.
She has said that due to problems with her teenager she did not meet the deadline for a private clinic, and the only clinic that would perform an abortion – another private clinic in Croydon told her it would cost $7500 to have a surgical termination.
She did not have the money to pay for it.
The Age reports that when the 41-year old mother returned to the Royal Women’s Hospital seeking another appointment for an abortion at around 22 weeks gestation, she was given an appointment with a social worker four-and-half weeks later.
It was then brought forward after she complained.
The woman reports that the social worker was sympathetic but that she was told the hospitals “termination review panel” had to approve the termination.
Now at 26 weeks she has been told that if the procedure went ahead, she would possibly see the fetus’ heart being injected with a lethal drug on an ultrasound screen. She would then be induced to deliver the baby.
“They advised that the birth will need to be registered and that a funeral director will need to be engaged,” she told The Age.
The termination review panel will review her case today.
“I was told: ‘No one wants to do it’ in relation to late-term terminations. I was told: ‘It’s very unpleasant’ for the doctor involved, as though it was fine for me and not at all distressing or unpleasant,” she said.
Under Victorian law, a woman can choose to have an abortion for any reason up to 24 weeks.
After 24 weeks’ two doctors must agree to the procedure.

5. Senator Eric Abetz uses racist language on radio.
Senator Eric Abetz has used a racist term while defending his stance on same sex marriage. Speaking to 2UE’s Justin Smith Senator Abetz had been discussing the right of bakers to refuse to make wedding cakes for gay couples who intended to wed.
Senator Abetz told Mr Smith that business people had the right to make such decisions saying “if a baker refused to make a cake for a Liberal Party function I don’t think I should be able to sue them or put them out of business”.
Smith said Senator Abetz would be furious at such a refusal and would stand up in the Senate to complain about “the cake that got knocked back”.
It’s like saying, “No Asians please, I don’t like Asians so don’t come in here and buy a cake”, Mr Smith said.
Senator Abetz then launched into the offensive language
“Those sort of analogies are quite offensive and that sort of analogy was completely debunked by Justice Clarence Thomas, the negro American on the Supreme Court of the United States dealing with this issue … who dissented on the issue of marriage as well,” Senator Abetz said.
Last year, while appearing on The Project Senator Abetz said numerous studies “assert that there is a link between abortion and breast cancer”. He later denied drawing the link and said he was cut off before finishing his sentence.

7. Education Minister criticised by disability advocates over comments.
The Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham has been slammed by disability advocates after he said he “thanks his lucky stars” his children do not have a disability.
“I think we look at some friends who have children with varying disabilities and I thank my lucky stars that’s not me,” Mr Birmingham told a Senate committee meeting in Canberra on Wednesday night.
“So I am very conscious of making sure we do what we can in that space.”
But some have said his comments were offensive.
Children with Disability Australia chief executive Stephanie Gotlib told The Canberra Times his language was not approporate.
“He is either acknowledging that the education system is causing significant challenges, or is he saying children with a disability themselves are a burden, and aren’t a valuable member of a family or community.”
“’They are constantly exposed to significant barriers in education, including constant bullying, and for them to hear that can easily cause harm and further diminish the views that we are trying to stop.”

If this abortion is granted I will be convinced that this world has gone mad.
If this baby was born prematurely thousands of dollars would be spent keeping it alive yet it is a possibility that it will have its heart injected with a lethal substance by the same doctors to kill it......how barbaric.
I sincerely hope people listen to this mother and can provide her some support with her teenager also. Despite the attitude some people seem to have, people don't tend to seek a late term abortion flippantly. If she is so desperate about her situation that she is suicidal, that's as much a life and death scenario and as any other mother whose pregnancy is endangering her life. Forcing her to continue the pregnancy and adopt is not going to improve her situation, she needs effective counselling and support immediately.
