1. The 19-year-old suspected to be behind the Boston bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is in police custody. Armed guards are protecting the hospital where Tsarnaev is currently being held, in a serious condition. An interrogation team is waiting to question the suspect.

2. An earthquake has hit China’s Sichuan province. At least 156 people are dead, and it is estimated another 5,500 are injured.

3. News Ltd reports that a number of former Labor MPs and union officials have recently been appointed to government and Commonwealth positions. Tony Abbott has warned that Julia Gillard should not rush to appoint the next Governor-General – the current Governor-General Quentin Bryce’s term finishes in March 2014 – as his government will likely overturn Labor appointments if the Coalition is elected in September.

4. Hundreds of children in the UK have received MMR jabs this weekend, at special emergency sessions, after a 25-year-old man was found dead. His suspected cause of death was measles.

5. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has been reelected to a second term in office, to try and break a two-month deadlock that has stopped the country forming government.

6. Town officials from the Central Texas town affected last week by the explosion of a fertiliser plant, has said the area impacted by the explosion is safe, and that some locals will now be allowed to return to their homes.

7. A South African man, Brett Archibald, was rescued by group of Australian surfers after treading water for 27 hours in Indonesian waters, 19 kilometres from the Mentawai Islands. Fairfax reports that as he was rescued, Archibald said, “’I love you Aussies, I’m never going to bag you guys ever again.”
