'I'm a fashion expert and these are 3 trends you'll be wearing all summer.'

With every season there comes a handful of standout fashion trends that quickly become mainstream. What you might have thought of as cool and different when you first bought it is suddenly being worn by everyone until it goes out of fashion and something else takes over.

Rinse and repeat.

While there's nothing wrong with that (I gave in and bought Adidas Sambas too), it's sometimes worth looking a little closer at the runway and at fashion weeks — because in amongst the 'big trends' are the smaller ones that sometimes get overlooked.

Leonie Barlow is a former magazine editor and fashion expert, known online as The Style Insider, who recently spotlighted some of the lesser-known trends that'll be big this summer.

"You may not like all of these trends but I'm sure you'll find something new to love," she said.

Let's get into it.

"At first glance, lace maxi skirts might seem more suited for evening wear or special occasions. However, pairing these elegant pieces with casual, everyday items like classic t-shirts or graphic tees can transform them into chic, daytime outfits," Leonie said.

"For a modern twist, try layering a belted blazer over your lace maxi skirt," she added. "If you're concerned about modesty, a simple slip can provide additional coverage.

"These skirts offer a breezy, fun option for summer and can be styled with flat sandals or sneakers for a relaxed look."

2. Scarves.

Scarves are making a notable comeback this season — but this time, styled a little differently.

"Inspired by Hailey Bieber's recent fashion statements, scarves are being worn in innovative ways," the fashion expert said.

"While tying a scarf over a baseball cap might not be everyone's cup of tea, the trend is catching on and is a playful way to update your look.

"For a more classic approach, consider wearing scarves as bandanas, neckties, or even tied around a ponytail. This accessory adds a splash of colour and print, making your outfit pop."

3. Nature-inspired statement pieces.

Shifting gears to jewellery, statement pieces are having a real moment in 2024 — especially those inspired by nature. Think floral earrings and a chunky shell necklace.

"If you’re a fan of mixing metals, now is a great time to experiment with both silver and gold," Leonie said.

"Nature-inspired jewellery can elevate a minimalist outfit, making it stand out with its unique, organic charm."

4. Elevated basics.

"Basics are getting a stylish upgrade," Leonie said. "This season, we're seeing everyday pieces like blazers and wide-leg pants featuring interesting design details."

The former magazine editor suggests looking for items with unique button placements or unexpected cuts.

"These small touches can make a significant difference, turning simple outfits into something special," she said.

5. Skorts.

Skorts are back, baby.

Leonie explained, "Skorts have evolved beyond their traditional shorter lengths and are now available in midi and knee-length styles. This trend aligns with the oversized Bermuda short look, offering a playful yet practical option for warm weather."

6. Jorts.

Speaking of Bermuda shorts...

"These oversized denim shorts provide a refreshing alternative to traditional jeans during the summer months. Pair them with a belt for a more polished look or go casual with a simple tee," Leonie said.

"Jorts are a great way to stay stylish and comfortable while embracing the summer heat."

7. Triple-cuff earrings.

Another jewellery trend to have on your radar is triple-cuff earrings.

Leonie said that these earrings offer a layered look without the hassle of stacking multiple pieces.

"They provide an easy way to add a bit of sparkle and sophistication to your ensemble. Whether in silver or gold, triple-cuff earrings are a chic addition to any jewellery collection."

8. Tie-detailed tops.

"Tie-detailed tops are making waves this summer, offering a whimsical touch to your wardrobe," the fashion expert explained.

"These tops, featuring ties at the front, sides, or back, add a feminine and playful element to your outfit. Pair them with structured pieces like denim shorts or skirts to balance the look.

"The tie detail adds a unique flair to basic tops, making them perfect for summer."

9. Mesh knit.

Another sheer trend quietly taking off is mesh knits.

"From bomber jackets to dresses, mesh knits are a stylish way to incorporate metallics into your wardrobe," Leonie said.

"These pieces can be layered over simple outfits to add a touch of sparkle and sophistication. Mesh knits offer a modern twist on traditional crochet and knitwear, making them a standout trend this season."

10. Oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses.

"Lastly, oversized tortoiseshell sunglasses are making a stylish comeback," Leonie said.

"Tortoiseshell provides a softer, more flattering look compared to classic black sunglasses. They’re a great choice for adding a touch of elegance to your summer outfits while keeping your eyes shielded from the sun."
