baby

The world has freaked out over this unusual baby name.

Some days I love humans and some days I lament the state of the world.

Today is one of those days where I’m split in two, the middle section of a venn-diagram where I’m torn between a state of pure elation and a more deep-seated worry.

Why? Because, this.

I know. Yes. It’s KVIIIlyn.

As in, Kaitlin. Or Caitlin. Or Caitlyn. Or Katelyn.

The internet has been thrown into an absolute frenzy after an eagle-eyed magazine reader spotted this little gem and posted it on Imgur and Reddit.  The caption was short, and to the point: “Surely a form of child abuse?”

But the mother didn’t seem to be plagued with anything other than pride.

She wrote to an undisclosed magazine saying, “I’ve always loved the name Kaitlyn but hated how popular it was. So when I found out I was having a girl, my husband suggested we replace the ‘ait’ with the Roman numeral symbol for eight! Now our daughter is truly unique.”

(At this point I don’t have the heart to tell the mother that when you say the baby’s name aloud, spelling has little impact on how unique the name sounds.)

When the image was then posted on Reddit, commenters had a field day discussing the legitimacy of the name and whether unusual spelling really is equated to ‘unique’.

“Kreaytiv spelling at its finest, because every child should be yooneek in every way. I think I’ll rename my son MarX,” one user wrote.

Another said, “This is a joke right. Who puts Roman numerals in a name. Ah well I guess its better than K8lin.”

And that’s a good point. K8lin would mean the apocalypse. This is just a little speed hump in comparison.

Should KVIIIlyn be part of this list? You decide.
