Warning, this post deals with statutory rape which may be triggering to some readers.
Statutory rape still applies to famous people. No exceptions.
This post was originally published on an American site. In Australia, the legal age of consent is 16.
So, here’s the thing: Statutory rape is still a crime and it’s not up for debate. We all understand why the law exists and we all pretty much agree that it’s a good law. Adults shouldn’t be having sex with teenagers.
Take, for example, Kylie Jenner and Tyga. She’s currently 17, he’s 25. He’s also a dad. There’s an eight-year age gap between them, and those are a pretty important eight years.
They've been dating since she was 16, and they knew each other before that. Yes, you should be creeped out by Tyga dating Kylie Jenner.
Kylie's older half-sister, Khloe, spoke out in defense of the relationship. Her defense is that Kylie isn't a normal 17-year-old, so this is a special case. People like Khloe are the reason why statutory rape laws exist.
Everyone always says that they're a special case; they never are. Khloe's reasoning is that Kylie just bought a house, is taking private meetings on private jets, and is basically living a celebrity lifestyle. For these reasons, Khloe doesn't see anything wrong with a 17-year-old dating a 25-year-old.
First of all, Tyga is the wrong that's wrong. He's clearly a predator, and he's doing what predators do. It's not unusual for a teenager to be attracted to somebody in their 20s. There's nothing "special" about that.
It's still not OK for Tyga to take advantage of a young girl, especially one with so much to lose. There are a lot of reasons other than love that might make Kylie appealing to Tyga.
