Kathleen Zellner – one of Steven Avery’s new lawyers – has suggested she is on the cusp of overturning the 53-year-old’s murder conviction with newly collected DNA samples.
In what is proving to be a very public defence of Avery and chastising of Manitowoc County’s “framing and blaming”, Zellner has utilised Twitter to keep MAM fans up to date with the case.
Earlier this week Zellner told followers she had made her fifth trip to the Waupun Correctional Institution where Avery is confined in Wisconsin. The tweet insinuates her team has uncovered a vital piece of DNA evidence she hopes will clear her client’s name.
“Collected samples for new tests. The inevitable is coming–he was smiling so were we,” she wrote.
This week, Zellner gave an explosive interview to TheLipTV, saying it was “obvious” who Teresa Halbach’s real killer was.
On the latest episode of Nitty Gritty Committe, Meshel Laurie spoke to Ken Kratz:
“It’s the evidence,” she said. “In having had a number of these cases, it has the signature of a wrongful conviction case. They only focused on him. They did not look at a lot of other suspects, certainly some very key people they should have been looking at.”
She continued: “There was a very poor investigation done of the victim’s background, who she was involved with, the circumstances of her life. It had all of the hallmarks of a wrongful conviction case.”
There are many questions left up in the air after Avery’s 2007 trial. (Post continues after video.)
As for her ongoing attempts to free the man she believe was wrongly convicted of murder, Zellner says advances in forensic testing will play into Avery’s favour.
“Since 2007 there have been significant advances in forensic testing and so clearly we’re going, the clearest way to do this is with scientific testing and that’s what we will be asking to do,” she said.
Earlier in the month, Manitowoc Country was granted extra time to gather documents related to Avery’s case. The county now has until March 2 to collate their files.
Do you believe Steven Avery killed Teresa Halbach?

I think Ivan milat could be our own Steven Avery- the evidence and his trial was pretty dodgy and their is some rumours evidence was planted.
I would love to see a documentary about that.
I'll believe it when I see it!
