5 key pieces you need to add to your spring wardrobe, according to a fashion editor.

Light a candle, wave some sage around your bedroom and make a beeline for your closet because we made it, pals. It's officially spring. Time to purge.

And so begins the ritual when we drag our winter coats out of their corner of the closet, throw them on the bed and chuck them in some space bags, ready to be stored away for who-cares-how-long. It's practically summer!

But now you've got a gaping, empty hole in your wardrobe. Sounds like a pretty good excuse to go shopping, no?

Hold on there cowboy, not so fast. If we've learnt anything from the sins of our fashion past, it's to be more intentional when stocking up for a new season. Rather than diving straight into trends that might not serve us in the long run, we can shop a bit more smartly by focusing on pieces that look right for the moment — but have some actual staying power.

If you're not sure where to start in filling that gap, I'm here to help. I've identified five key pieces you can add to your wardrobe now, and get lots of mileage out of in the months ahead - promise.

1. The white pant.

I know what you're thinking. White pants can be scary — but you're going to have to trust me on this one. White trousers can be worn by absolutely everyone, it's all about finding the silhouette that works for you. My pick for versatility and ease of wear is a wide-leg pant, especially as the weather warms up.

A good quality pair of pants is definitely worth the investment, as they're basically seasonless and can easily be dressed up or down. We're seeing lots of high-waisted options in crisp white linen and cotton around, but if you're not feeling the tailored look, size-inclusive brand Commonry has a draped viscose style in cream that's effortlessly chic.

Here are a few of my recommendations:

Dissh Holden White Linen Pant, $129.99.

2. The lounge set.

Good news: sets aren't going anywhere. I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when the fashion gods decided we could leave the house in two-piece outfits resembling pyjamas.

We've had various iterations of the look over the past year or two, but this time around, we'll see sets in soft textures like knit, terry towelling and rib coming in hot. Minimal shapes in light cotton poplin and linen are also having their time in the sun.

I'm loving these ones:

3. The linen midi skirt.

Demure is having a moment, and we're going to see more refined styles hanging around until next year. One of the essential pieces to invest in for the warmer months is a simple linen skirt that hits somewhere just above your ankles — perfect for pairing with leather sandals all the way through summer. Look for a column shape or one that's more fluted at the hem if you prefer a bit more movement.

4. The silk scarf.

If there's one accessory I can guarantee you'll see everywhere over summer, it's the headscarf. Blame celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Sabrina Carpenter for putting them on the mainstream map, but bandanas and silk headscarves have actually been trending away in the fashion and influencer world for a while now.

They're a super fast way to update your spring look without investing in a whole new outfit.

If you're not a hair accessory person, you can always tie one around your neck, wrist or even the handle of your bag for a chic flash of print.

5. The minimal sandal.

Whether you go for a thong shape or a strappier style, make sure you have a leather (or vegan leather) sandal on hand. Flip-flops are one of the buzziest shoe trends to emerge this year, and we're seeing elevated versions of this Aussie classic hit the high street now. The new way to wear them is with your eveningwear or tailored pieces for a cool, understated twist.

Aere Leather Platform Thongs, $120.
