The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has knocked Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster hit, American Sniper out of the top spot in the box office over the weekend in the US.
Who would’ve thought that a squidgy yellow dude who lives under water could knock a true-life war movie from the number one spot?
According to US Sunday estimates, Paramount Pictures SpongeBob movie earned over AUS$72 million, which is a massive amount for the debut of an animation transferred from TV to the big screen.
The huge success of the Nickelodeon animation saw American Sniper drop off the box office top spot after holding the title for three weeks straight. The drama reeled a whopping AUS$24.2 million in its fourth week after its debut.
Sponge Out of Water is the second movie following on from 2004's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. It is proof that the yellow guy is still a huge hit with movie-goers. It shows that people are eager for family-friendly light-hearted films that will give them somewhat of a release from their lives, or give them an activity fit for the entire family.
American Sniper is an Oscar-nominated film that will rake in $300 million by next weekend. But for now it seems to have been bumped by the under water world of SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals.
Sponge Out of Water will be at cinemas on 2 April 2015.
