Byron Bay’s annual palooza of music, hedonism and fash-un is back.
In 2019, it is not enough to fork out $500+ for a three-day pass to Splendour in the Grass, you must also put a lot of emotional labour and energy into your festival fashion look. Instagram demands it.
This year’s event includes a heavy whammy of 70s-inspired paisley, big hair and bare butts. It’s sensationally absurd, and makes for brilliant people watching.
So move aside Tame Impala, Childish Gambino and Matt Corby (just some of the musicians on this year’s roster), because the real acts are here.
1. Arseless festival ‘chaps’ really are a thing.
It’s 2019, and people sometimes spend their hard-earned clams on pants that are missing their… bottoms.
Two points for garment construction, nine points for pluckiness.
But who wore it better? The brave and valiant festival attendees or Mamamia’s very own Clare Stephens?
2. Neon green is the colour trend precisely nobody asked for.
At least your friends will be able to spot you in a crowd, especially important when you’re mingling among 42,500ish people.
3. The hair and makeup looks that leave us with one question… how?
100 per cent not tent-friendly, and yet we cannot look away.
4. Pants optional.
The severe lack of pants continues. But fashion statement aside, it really is the best way to take advantage of Byron Bay’s lush warm winter weather.
5. #Instagram made me do it.
Did these punters know that Instagram would hide their ‘like count’ ahead of the weekend festival? Probably not, but that didn’t stop them from pulling out their sartorial best.
They’re living their best lives, and it’s one that includes puffy sleeves, corset-detailing and embroidery.
6. The ‘we weren’t alive for Woodstock, so now’s our chance’.
Paisley print, flared pants and more mustard than a hot dog van, these festival revellers prove that the Summer of Love is merely a frame of mind.
