My message to women contemplating having a baby and taking maternity leave would be to join the union if one is available beforehand! They really will try and do the right thing by you, but its not fair on the financial members who pay their fees every month to then have someone join up only when things arent going their way and they need support.
I was a member of the FSU and when I had my first baby I had several phone calls checking how my maternity leave was going and if I was happy with the way my leave was handled etc and then offered support if I needed my return conditions negotiated. They were very supportive.
I worked for a sole practitioner (lawyer) and I was the only employee he had ever had fall pregnant. I used to express in a private spare office. I was the only support staff for a while, and I couldn't lock the front doors from inside, so would place a sign saying office was unattended and to return in thirty minutes. One dunderhead still blundered on in. Thankfully I had not started expressing yet. I stomped out in my dressing gown, and holding a breast pump, and snarled to have a look at the sign! My boss and I had a few arguments over it because he was not aware of the mechanics of lactation (he had children but none were breastfed). I once heard a call, 'Simone, it's two o'clock!' when I was still in flow. He would not have called that if I was on the toilet, would he? Workers need to be educated. I think it's a disgrace that someone should express in the toilet, and for a worker to say what she was doing is 'gross'. Seriously, who does their food preparation in the toilet?
