1. Security staff at Nauru detention centre have allegedly been spying on an Australian Senator.

A former security guard at Nauru detention centre has alleged Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young was spied on during a visit to the island, a Senate inquiry heard yesterday.

Senator Hanson-Young is considering referring the allegations to a parliamentary inquiry, which could result in the prosecution of the individuals involved.

“I don’t think it was appropriate for anybody on Nauru to watch me and to listen to the conversations I was having with individuals,” she said.

“Members of parliament must be free to be able to work without intimidation or interference… spying on a politician, that’s frankly illegal.”

She also hit back at Prime Minister Tony Abbott for dismissing her concerns.

“Women don’t like to be watched. The fact the Prime Minister, the Minister for Women, doesn’t seem to understand that, beggars belief.”

The inital allegation made by a Wilson Security guard was heard at a Senate inquiry into abuse and conditions at Nauru detention centre.

2. A Catholic primary school in Australia has sent children home with an anti-gay marriage brochure.

St Paul’s Catholic primary school in the Darwin suburb of Nightcliff, has reportedly sent pupils home with a brochure titled “don’t mess with marriage.”

NT News reported the brochure — published on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Australia — details the Catholic Church’s continuing opposition to same sex marriage, and claims “same-sex friendships are of a very different kind.”

The brochure details “research” on same sex relationships and how it is “messing with kids.”

“Only a woman can be a mother; only a man can be a father,” the brochure says.
