The internet has never shown as much compassion as it has for this sad dog.

Every few months, a certain type of story emerges — one that makes people feel a weird kind of sadness.

Remember Papaw, who made dinner for his six grandkids to have only one of them show up? So sad. And remember the man who waited in an airport for 10 days for his online girlfriend who never came? Tragic.

There’s a very specific type of emotion that comes from hearing a story about someone who is in a lonely situation, and will ultimately be left to feel… foolish.

This week, there’s another such story doing the rounds. But this time, it’s about a dog named Dublin.

You see, Dublin got dressed up as a devil for Halloween. He was really excited greet trick or treaters at his door. Like, really excited.

But then, you guys, everyone was too scared to pet him. EVERYONE.

So he just sat outside really sad and feeling like no one liked him/appreciated his costume.

Dublin’s owner, William, tweeted photos of the disappointed doggo, and they quickly went viral.

I think we can all agree this is the saddest thing that has ever happened.

Later in the evening, William tweeted a photo of Dublin crying actual tears.

Sure, experts say dogs can’t really cry. Sure, his eyes may have just been watery. But NO. We’re certain Dublin was crying because no one would pet him and he was embarrassed about his costume.

Of course, with Dublin’s ordeal going viral, Twitter users were quick to express their very raw emotions regarding what had happened.

“TELL YOUR DOG I LOVE HIM,” one user tweeted, while another wrote, “I’ve never been more sad in my life.”

Others knew their sorrow couldn’t be conveyed in words, so took photos of themselves crying.

The internet is a weird place, but I like it.

Were people overreacting? Perhaps.

Are there more serious issues we should be paying attention to? Most definitely.

But look deep into this dog’s eyes and tell me you don’t feel a weird kind of sadness.
