Rob Mills was so "freaked out" by his Australian Idol fame, he contemplated suicide.

Australian music icon Rob Mills has shared his struggles with mental health in an incredibly honest new interview.

The singer told Yahoo7′s Maz Compton he contemplated suicide after being thrust into the spotlight following his appearance on Australian Idol in 2003.

“That was the worst, I freaked out,” he said.

“I contemplated suicide only once in my life, and that was the week after I finished Idol.”

Mills said post-show life allowed him to realise he didn’t actually “want” any of the aspects that came alongside fame.

Compton drew Mills into speaking about his current role as an ambassador for the upcoming ‘R U OK’ Day on September 8.

Mills stressed the importance of checking in on not just the mental health of others, but also of oneself.

“It’s very important to ask those questions, not just of other people around you, but of yourself as well,” he said.

“Surround yourself with people who help you with that, even if it’s just a mate, or a psychologist, psychiatrist. I’m a massive advocate of that as well.”

Mills is currently on a break after finishing a tour of Ghost the Musical.
