Middle Island plane crash: One person dies, three airlifted to hospital.

One person has died and three others have been airlifted to hospital after a tourist plane crashed onto a remote beach in central Queensland.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said two planes, both involved with tourist activities, were flying together when the one which was trailing saw the first go down on Middle Island, off Agnes Water, about 10:40am.

The second plane landed not too far from the crash site and those on board called triple0.

Of the four people in the crashed plane, one has died, two are in serious conditions and one is stable.

They have been taken to Bundaberg and Rockhampton hospitals.

"The aircraft is a small plane and I believe that it is involved in tourist activities," Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokeswoman Mindy Thomas said."It is unknown at this stage what caused the plane to come down."

Two rescue helicopters were called in to help following the accident, with the island only accessible by road at low tide.

Ms Thomas said one of the helicopters arrived at the scene about 12:10pm and a second was flying into Bundaberg from Townsville to help with evacuations.

"It will be a number of hours before all patients are safely extricated as well as all staff from QAS," she said.

Damian Freiberg who runs the CQ Plane Spotting blog said they heard the emergency call to air traffic control on their radio scanner.

"We heard that a wing had been broken off and the plane [was] upside down," he said.

"It [didn't] sound good."

The plane that crashed was on a flight for tourist company 1770 Castaway.

The company specialises in "castaway" fly-in camping trips to the island.
