I want to thank you for this article. especially for the last two paragraphs.
I've sometimes felt that when you are talking about what has happened to you, you again lose the right to say 'NO' as society sees it. As if when you choose not to share every detail or answer every question someone has, it invalidates it in their mind. I have had the experience of people being dismissive, to put it politely, if I wouldn't tell them what they wanted to know. And that's a violation of a different sort, emotional, but still a violation.
To have someone say 'it's not someone's right to know everything, just what you feel like sharing' is an extremely empowering statement. It is what everyone who has ever gone through sexual assault needs to be told. And have reinforced over and over....
Those paragraphs brought tears of relief and understanding to my eyes. Thank you.
