I’ve recently turned 50 and have enjoyed a love affair with clothes from a tender age…think massively oversized white tee emblazoned with ‘choose life’, paired with a black balloon skirt then tying it altogether with fluro jelly shoes….it felt right and fun and fabulous at the time and I can reminisce about all the decades and their various trends, fondly.

Like most posters I have found myself flummoxed by the cut-out trend. Then I have found myself pondering on inspection of these garments… “if I had the hard body required, acquired via strict exercise and discipline, would I be contemplating trying this on?’ The answer is no. ‘But what if you were 20, would you do it?’ Nope.

So I get a self satisfied satisfaction from seeing an abundance of cut-outs in the heavily discounted sections of sales….. but my imagination quickly turns my ‘told you so!’ into a quiet dismay.

Because then I’ve daydreamed of these garments eventually being sold in huge bales to go to poorer economies, sight unseen (because you can’t give away the fucking things here) And then sorters rummaging through and finding tonnes of these cut out dresses that will go straight to the land fill pile because it would be obscene to offer a disadvantaged person a western fashion faux pas. But I digress.

At best they are a beach cover-up (that unfortunately fail at their primary objective).

Sorry to all the women who enjoy wearing these dresses. Hand on heart, I’m not judgmental of you when you do, because I genuinely never see anyone wearing them.
