Living life on the edge

paul s May 19, 2020

@sunshine Like I understand the value to families of a safe way to save money in property, but surely no one believes house prices can just infinitely inflate like this?

paul s May 19, 2020

@sunshine It's a shame that house price discussions are so focused on the "investment" rather than about being somewhere to live.

@mamamia-user-869298775 Thanks for that, on the My Profile page you can click a comment to go to the article where it was left. Not sure if that's what you mean, but we'll see what we can do to make this more obvious.

paul April 29, 2020

@Zepgirl Thanks for giving us another chance! In addition to a refocused effort on improving our comments section, we've got some other great things coming which we hope makes it worth your while!

paul April 28, 2020

@rush Ah yes that's a great point, we should have somewhere you can go to see where new comments are happening "live" on the site, rather than having to pick a random article. We were trying to ensure we gave the same functionality as the previous system gave with this list of recent articles, but we can absolutely do something better.

Can't give a firm timeline but will add it to the pipeline. Shouldn't be too long!

paul April 28, 2020

@rush If you'd like to make your recommendations privately just submit them from the contact form here https://www.mamamia.com.au/contact/

paul April 28, 2020

@snorks Thanks Snorks, both of these are in the pipeline.

The notifications will be added to the "My Profile" page at the top right in the next week. We'll add a visual cue to the icon to let you know you someone has replied

We do have a plan to put the number of comments an article has on the homepage / vertical pages, but this one will likely be a bit longer.

Cheers

paul April 28, 2020

@rush We're getting much faster on how quickly we process comments, hopefully you've noticed an improvement already! We'll keep working to bring the time down from when you post the comment to when it's approved.

On the upvotes issue we're still looking into this one, we've got an idea of what the issue is, but we'll probably need another week to resolve.

We won't stop working on it until it's something we can be proud of - we're in a much better position to make improvements now so please do keep letting us know what you think and what features you'd like to see. If there was a particular way that you would use the previous system that is no longer possible we'd love to hear about it!

Have modified Lizzie's username so that it's not her email address, will be adding a filter to prevent people accidentally doing this shortly

Completely agree Rush, the team have just finished updating our commenting policies:

https://www.mamamia.com.au/commenting-policy/

We're working on a way to get these clearly identified to everyone, but here's an advanced version for you to take a look at. There's a comment section on that article, so if you have any thoughts about this policy feel free to leave a comment!

We're probably going to add a "Contact Us" form to that article in the near future to make recommendations more likely to be seen, but for now I'll be watching that comment section.

Thanks!

Comments have always required approval, even with Disqus (the previous system), they just showed you the comment without it actually having been approved yet.

We get a significant amount of spam comments which would render the comments section filled with junk extremely quickly if we allowed them to appear by default - once a bot realises their comments are successfully being displayed, they rapidly expand the rate at which they post and it becomes pretty overwhelming. We could require a "CAPTCHA" for signup, but the bots have gotten pretty good ways around these too now.

In addition, defamation laws are pretty strict these days around comments on websites, check out this article

👍 check the My Profile page in a week or so, should have it added by then

paul April 23, 2020

Hi David,

Thanks for the suggestions - we're working on a way of notifying you when you have new replies (just list of replies that you've received in My Profile to start, but Push Notifications are a bit further down the pipeline).

Regarding comments that are awaiting approval, we're working hard to approve comments as quickly as possible which should mitigate the problem

Cheers

Hi Suz, I think I've found and resolved this issue. Let me know if you notice anything like that again! You can reach me most reliably using the site contact form. Thanks again for your help!

Thanks Suz, I've found the article you're talking about, I can definitely see what you mean. I'm getting to the bottom of it now.

It's really appreciated that you've helped us find this issue!

We'll take a look at the upvotes system and see if they're being lost. Note that we show the upvote to you straight away, but if you were to refresh the page you would possibly see the cached version (a stored version of the page that helps it load faster) that doesn't have the upvote yet. Our pages are recached every 20 minutes or so. If the upvote still isn't appearing after 20 minutes, we have a problem!

We'll do some testing to double check this, thanks for raising it.

I'll see what we can do about putting out some more information for everyone; we're working on building out a lot of new community features, and the challenging switch away from Disqus was required to achieve this. We're working hard to patch up any issues that are reported to us, so please keep reporting in either the comments or through the contact form, we are listening!
