Has your son had a proper sleep study done with a sleep specialist? After a lifetime of poor sleeping and exhaustion  i was diagnosed with very severe sleep apnoea caused by an abnormally narrow airway. No amount of sleep training or crying it out would fix my physical abnormality but it can be treated with cpap.
