In 1985, Bryan Adams wrote a song called “Diana” with the lyrics “The day that he married you I nearly lost my mind,” and ever since, there has been a rumour that he and the late Princess Diana had an affair.
Now, more than 20 years after her death, he has finally spoken on the matter.
In an interview with Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, the 58-year-old Canadian said the pair were “good friends”.
“There are many rumours that you and Princess Diana were once romantically involved. Her butler said that he used to sneak you into Kensington Palace… how would you characterise your relationship with Princess Diana?” asked the host.
“Great friends. And she didn’t sneak me in, I would just roll up,” responded the musician.
Desperate to know the truth, the 50-year-old host cheekily suggested they were friends with benefits, to which Adams responded, “Um, she was just… we were good friends”.
The claims that Diana’s butler would sneak men into Buckingham Palace were made in a book by Tom Bower, called Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles which was published earlier this year. The butler, Paul Burrell, allegedly claimed that he was asked to cancel public engagements so that Diana could spend time with her boyfriends. He also allegedly claimed that the late princess would ask for private meals, after sneaking the men inside.
Following the death of Diana in 1997, Bryan Adams refused to play the song “Diana” live for good.
