Welcome to Tinder - for parents.

Meet the new mum who was so lonely when she was home with her baby, she took to handing out her phone number to strangers.

Some mums find a magical mothers’ group that is almost like fitting a piece into a puzzle. They click and they bond quickly over boobs and bottles and baby weights.

If that’s what your experience is then count your lucky stars because it isn’t that way for all mums.

Those mothers in remote areas, those who move interstate or even just those who don’t mesh with the local group of mothers can find new motherhood a very lonely experience.

Aside from the physical shock of having a baby, it is a massive mental challenge.

That sudden shift from a life filled with people and chatter to a house filled with small, tied-up nappy bags and half drunk cups of tea.

So for many women a new online platform may go some way towards alleviating that loneliness.

A Brisbane mother has launched a free online platform that allows mums to connect with others based on similar locations, interests, lifestyle, culture and ages of their children.

It’s Tinder – for mums!

Called Playdate Australia it was set up by a mum of 2 toddlers who was finding it hard to make like-minded friends.

Founder, Pinar Parry said that short of going door-to-door knocking, she had trouble meeting other mums.

Her experience is one of hundreds and thousands that women go through daily.

A few years ago a woman – who is now a good friend of mine – was so desperate with loneliness she took to handing out pieces of paper with her phone number on them at the local park.

Her experience is one of hundreds and thousands that women go through daily.

She had recently moved to Sydney from the UK and had tried playgroups, sporting activities and story time at the library but all the other mothers seemed so busy, or so caught up in their own world she couldn’t break in.

Her homemade “business card” caught my eye and with kids the same age, we hit it off.

According to a UK survey new mums, on average, spend only 90 minutes a day in the company of other adults – and more than half of them say that having a baby left them feeling isolated and lonely.

Pinar said that Playdate Australia is a space for these isolated women to reach out.

“A place that keeps you up to date with what’s happening in your neighbourhood, new members, playdates, mothers groups - so you never miss out," she said.

Do you think it sounds like a good idea? How did you find friends when you first had children?
