Pink and Kelly Clarkson's duet at the AMAs is leaving people all over the globe in tears.

This year’s opening performance for the American Music Awards was different from the others.

Not only were Pink and Kelly Clarkson performing together for the first time, but their cover of R.E.M.’s hit Everybody Hurts honoured those affected by the shootings, natural disasters and hate-fuelled violence that occurred during the year.

Introducing the two vocal powerhouses, Jamie Foxx said, “this year, perhaps more than any other in recent history… we needed the power of music to help us heal, and here to pay respects to all those affected by the events of the past year, are two of the world’s most powerful voices coming together for the first time.”

Lush vocals aside, behind the scenes we learnt that this performance was perhaps a long time coming, with both singers fans of the other.

In a previous interview with host of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen, Pink said, “if I did a song with Kelly Clarkson, I would get out sung,” with Clarkson returning the admiration on Cohen’s radio show.

While that certainly didn’t happen, both Clarkson and Pink posted many a supportive message for each other on both Twitter and Instagram.

@kellyclarkson you can’t be an actual human. That voice ????
