“A 2-year-old is like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it,” – Jerry Seinfeld.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a more apt description of life with a toddler. At this age, they’re interesting little humans…walking, some are talking, and all are passionately committed to testing patience; our forward-planning capabilities, and eardrum capacity. They’re unpredictable; who knows when the next facedown tantrum will occur? Or conversely, when they’ll wrap their arms around you and make you feel like you’re the most loved person who ever existed? If you’re going through this age and stage with your little one – let me assure you – we’re all in this together. To prove it – here are 10 faces/scenarios every parent of toddlers will relate to…

1. The “I didn’t mind this” face.

Usually occurs following spaghetti bolognaise, or anything in which the main ingredient is milk.

2. The “I’ve just put your car keys somewhere totally hilarious and this is going to be great fun” face.

Cheeky faces always mean trouble, as does silence. (For first-timers: your keys are likely to be in the sandpit, the laundry basket, the toilet bowl, the dog bowl, the fish bowl, the outside drainpipe, the rubbish bin, or behind the television unit. Good luck.)

3.  The “I’m not tired” face.

As noted in the caption, often appears with absolute commitment following swimming lessons, trampoline time, playgroup, play dates, visits to hardware or home wares stores accompanied by tantrums, or, following their own executive decision to ‘skip nap time’. Whilst not an ideal scenario, this face is definitely more preferable to the following.

4. The “I’m so freaking tired I do not know what to do with myself” face.

There is a 50/50 chance this will be the outcome following an aforementioned executive decision of nap skipping. Packet yoghurts are what I do here – anything to get some nutrients into them and quickly before my eardrums jump out of my head and move house. Good times!

5. The “gift you didn’t ask for” face.

This ‘delighted plus accomplished’ expression typically means poo. By this age though you can usually rely on your now refined sense of smell and scent familiarity to identify that your little mate has pooed, even when they’re surrounded by 20 other kids. What a skill!

6. The “you are not Mariah Carey – that’s a no from me” face.

Will appear in the rear window or at home during your shower – basically whenever you’re singing – a solid mix of confusion, fear and judgment communicating; “Please, just stop. This noise you are making is offensive and ruining the mood.”

7. The “when your toddler sees you in your shower cap” face.

Engaged at first, horrified shortly thereafter. Sometimes occurs when I’m in change rooms.

8. The “you never let me do anything” face.

Not really a face, more a position that typically appears when you’re being a horrible parent, like refusing to let them hold the iron, throw a vase in a store, ram a shopping trolley into someone’s ankles, or eat one of the dog’s liver treats.

9. The “this is the best day of my life mummy” face.

Presents when you let them do something similar to the above, or when you give them an amazing gift such as a discarded box, or a peg. Often the most unpredictable things can yield the positive reaction.

10. The “you are hilarious mummy” face.

Appears when you perform a silly dance, slip over by accident, or just appear from behind your own hands. Seriously the best face, sound, and feeling in the whole world, and makes everything completely worth it.
