Open post: comment about ANYTHING

By MIA FREEDMAN

You guys. You asked for Open Post to return – a chance to talk about ANYTHING in the comments –  and so here we are. I forget why we stopped publishing it each Wednesday. We thought you were sick of it. That  you’d moved on.  Found other posts to love.

But in our recent hap-hazard survey where we asked for what you wanted to see here in 2013, there was a lot of fond reminiscing about Open Post and many requests for a comeback.

I’ve been in Melbourne this week with MM’s Managing Editor Jamila, doing some presentations at media agencies.

In between meetings, Jam and I nicked out onto the balcony at Austereo (where we went for a meeting with the Mamamia Today show team) and recorded a quick podcast. Unlike our first attempt which was a bit stiff and – frankly – boring (look, it was about sport. Enough said) this one is going to be a little looser and I think that’s the format we’ll take moving forward.

We should be posting it here tomorrow or Friday so remember to check back.

On Monday night, I caught up with one of my closest friends – Wendy Squires – who moved to Melbourne a  year or so ago and who I miss dearly. We went to one of my favourite restaurants, Cafe e Cucina on Chapel st and had delicious calamari and pasta and wine and I don’t think I paused for breath in 3 hours. We hadn’t seen each other in months and there was a lot to catch up on.

The only times I wasn’t speaking was when I was chewing and even then, I think I was also talking.

She dropped me back to the hotel and as I walked into the foyer, along this carpet:

I became distracted by this life-sized cow sculpture:

….and promptly walked straight into the glass sliding doors. Smack. Bang.

The noise was loud. Everyone stared. People came running from the reception desk.

And all I could think was that I wanted to blurt out “I’m NOT DRUNK! REALLY!” but in a moment of clarity, I realised that that’s exactly what a drunk person would say so instead, I limped quietly to the lift and retreated sheepishly to my room with a broken toenail, bruised finger and massively dented pride.

The art in the room is pretty trippy – very strong. I didn’t know much about this artist before I stayed here- I usually stay at its sister hotel The Olsen when I’m in Melbourne – but it’s certainly a dynamic vibe. Way trendy. The day I arrived was 36 degrees (even at midnight) and yesterday was cold and rainy.

Goddamn I love you Melbourne – even if your weather be cray-cray.

How is your week? What’s on your mind? Show this post (and us) that you love it by leaving a comment – about anything!
