An elderly man has been captured tending to his wife in the ultimate act of love.

It’s a big call to make, but this photo of an elderly US couple sharing a loving moment at a petrol station could just be the most heartwarming thing we’ve seen all year.

Shared by Nashville man Brent Kelley via Facebook this week, the photo shows an elderly man sitting on the outskirts of the passenger side door with an ice cream cup.

“So today, I took the kids to the pool and we stopped for ice cream on the way home,” Kelley began.

"When I got my ice cream and pulled out, I realized that this elderly man beside me was sitting out side his car door, spoon feeding his wife ice cream who also looked in her late eighties."

Kelley also said the man had draped a towel over his wife's shirt front and was feeding her ice cream to help her cope with the 36C heat they were experiencing that day.

"It was a beautiful display of love," Kelley said finally.

Since sharing the photo on Tuesday, Kelley's post has gone viral, with thousands sharing the beautiful display of love caught in passing.

"Sweetest thing I've ever seen. Love like this is just so rare," one Facebook user commented.

"What a nice way to show he loves her. This world needs a whole lot of guys like him. My son took me out for ice cream a couple days ago and we sat on a bench in a park and talked. I almost cried. He's a gentleman," another shared.

"Life should be more like this," another added.
