War, murder, torture, rape, cannibalism. Welcome to the aftermath of ‘Kony’ and his Rebels. As the recovery from the war continues in Northern Uganda it seems this fragile nation has been delt another blow. “Nodding Disease” is sweeping through the region, literally taking out a generation with it.
Let me tell you about “Nodding Disease”. It is a disease that only has recently made itself known, the first case in this area being recorded around 2007. It affects children between the ages of 5 and 15; symptoms include nodding uncontrollably when presented with food, also nodding off in a dazed kind of state.
Seizures, similar to epilepsy, elephantiasis symptoms, limbs not growing, erratic behavior, dental abnormalities, uncontrollable drooling, vacant facial stares, elephantitus and retarded physical growth to name a few.
A lot of the children with Nodding Disease present with severe burns to their body, they have either had a seizure and been burnt by the family’s cooking fire, or they have (in a state of daze) thrown themselves into the fire. Children erratically have run off into the bushes and stepped on animal traps, breaking and splitting their legs open. Children have also drowned after throwing themselves in the river unintentionally during a seizure or whilst in a “dazed state”.
As the child is in a “daze” and “out of it” the cases of sexual violence against the young girls suffering Nodding Disease is very high. Resulting in numerous cases of (on average) 14 year olds pregnant and unaware of what happened or who the father is. Nodding disease also affects their memory so there is no hope of identifying their rapist even if there was an opportunity to do so.

I have just received a letter from my 8yr sponsored world vision child in Uganda, and her community leader writes to tell me she is very sick with Nodding Disease. I am awaiting to hear more information from World Vision on how and if I can help her and her community any further, but in meantime logged onto internet and came across your report and video taken last year. As you said in your report, it makes you put life into perspective when you think of the daily suffering of these people and their families. Thank you for all your information I will follow your links on the organisations that are trying to send some aid and support to Uganda. Thank you.
Hi Ladies
I so appreciated reading your comments - It's taken me a while to reply with any options for support, as a few of you have asked, as currently there are no NGO's on the ground supporting nodding disease. (IT did take a while to get through to them all and clarify that). Good news is World Vision are aware and are looking at implementing some kind of support program. I've been looking at setting up something and as you can imagine the most important thing is making sure the best people are on hand and equipped in Northern Uganda to then implement the strategies and distribute the assistance in the most productive way. Through Sarah Rudolphs foundation - which was mentioned in the article - (which is still in birthing stages) we are looking at potentially getting a shipping container which we could fill with blankets and warm clothing (as some of you had asked how you could donate blankets). In the meantime http://www.ccfpader.org/ based in Pader Northern Uganda are going implement a response program and they do have great people there on the ground who can best administrate the donations. They will be the first to have any kind of response to Nodding Disease! They currently finalising the program which is very exciting. LASTLY please tune in to Ten Late News Tonight as they are running a story on Nodding Disease and tweet them @tenlatenews and tell them your thoughts. Thanks so much! Emma xxx
