It’s the image that has graced newspaper front pages and social media worldwide. The iconic photo of Nidhi Chaphekar.
With her yellow flight attendant uniform torn from her body she sits shocked and stunned on a seat just moments after the bomb went off in the Brussels terror attacks that left 32 people dead.
With her body dust covered and her eyes weeping in that moment the photograph has encapsulated the horror that took place.
Ms Chephekar, the woman in the jacket is a long-serving employee of the India-based flight company Jet Airways and mother of two. She has been the focus of worldwide attention with many wondering just how she survived.
It has now been reported that the young mother is recovering from injuries sustained in the bombings. The flight attendant underwent surgery yesterday for injuries and burns to her face and eyes.
Her family have now spoken out.
Rupesh Chaphenkar, Nidhi’s husband, told the Times of India: “For the whole day we did not have any information. All they told us was she is safe. But how do I know if they are not just giving us false hopes? I just want to hear her voice once.”
He said he was at work when he heard about the terror attack and rushed home while his sister-in-law picked up their two children from school.
