Who remembers in early high school when all your friends began getting their “monthlies” or their “time of the month”? It was kind of weird to use the P word right?
It would have been awkward talking about the ‘P word’ in a playground crowded with slightly immature teenage boys playing handball less than three metres away.
But now we’re not in the playground, why should we be afraid to use the word period to talk about our menstrual cycles?
Why do we hide behind euphemisms when we all know what we’re really talking about?
It’s a period! A natural female bodily function. Let’s start using the word!
We took to the Mamamia office to see what euphemisms staff has used to say they have their period. It was…informative.

Wouldn't say period is the correct word or specific.
The word period simply implies a time frame.
So now we should also refer to our other body parts and functions by the correct medical terminology. If there's one that needs instant correction it's the misuse of the term vagina to describe external genitalia.
Isn't "period", a nickname too? Isn't "Menstrual period" more correct? Already sanitising it by dropping the dreaded "M" word?
