Police are calling on the public to help locate missing Melbourne teenager Owen Clune.

His mother, The Guardian journalist Bronwen Clune, is desperately appealing for help from the public on social media.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said Owen told his father he was going to his school in Malvern, but never arrived.

His step-mother arrived home around lunchtime to discover his school bag and uniform were still in the house.

The disappearance is out of character and Owen has no access to cash or a mobile phone.

It is not known what the public transport-savvy teen was wearing.

Ms Clune has asked the public to check any places they know where a young person might shelter from the rain, adding Owen is familiar with the suburbs of Malvern, East Malvern, Elsternwick, Balaclava and Bentleigh East.

She said he has not contacted any of his friends.

“This guy is tops and needs to get home safe,” Ms Clune said.

Owen is of Caucasian appearance, about 176cm tall, and has a slim build, short dark hair and blue eyes.

Anyone who sees Owen is urged to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
