Vic Police are on the hunt for a murderer after teen's remains are found in a mine shaft.

Human remains discovered down a Bacchus Marsh mineshaft last month have been formally identified as those of missing Melbourne teenager Cayleb Hough.

Cayleb, a 17-year-old from Chelsea Heights in Melbourne’s south east, was last seen in a blue Ford Falcon XR6 sedan in the nearby suburb of Highett early on December 20 2015.

Police are currently treating the teenager’s death as suspicious.

The remains were discovered on March 10 in a shallow mineshaft near the Seerey Track in Lerderderg State Park, and this morning police and SES volunteers began preparing to mount a new search of the area.

Missing Persons Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Rhodes has appealed for information from anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the park since last December.

"Someone out there knows who is responsible for Cayleb’s death and we are appealing for them to come forward and contact police," said Det Snr Sgt Rhodes.

"Cayleb’s family deserve some answers in relation to this horrific tragedy."

Victoria Police have released the above images of clothes similar to that worn by Cayleb in the hope that it might spark the memory of a member of the public.

They are also seeking information from anyone who saw the Ford Falcon in which Cayleb had been a passenger on the day of his disappearance. The car, registration SOG 812, was found dumped at the Crown Casino on January 16. It is being examined by police as part of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
