As it currently stands, the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, has spread to over 140 countries. Thousands are dead and close to over 160,000 infected, with death tolls in places like Italy and Spain rising more quickly than they were in China at the same stage of outbreak. Late last week, the virus was declared a global pandemic, and hour to hour, minute to minute, updates come from all over the world about the previously unimaginable measures that are being taken to curb the spread.
Schools closed.
Workplaces shut.
Entire cities, entire countries in lockdown.
The advice from the medical community about how to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic is relatively clear: to the extent that it is feasible, we must self-isolate. While the mortality rate of the virus is low (but much higher for vulnerable individuals and the elderly), a secondary challenge comes when our healthcare system is overrun. If a lot of people get sick at the same time, we don’t necessarily have the resources to provide them all with optimal medical care. Self isolation makes it possible to ‘flatten the curve’ – spreading the outbreak over a longer period of time, to prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed.

Don't get me started on the Vitamin C, colloidal silver and Mummy's Blessed Pyramid Scheme of the Divine Goddess Immune Boosting Essential Oil. You're average Instagram celebrity won't tell you that while Vitamin C IS good, it is possible to overdose on it, as you can with any substance, resulting in vomiting, diarrhea and the associated dehydration. Severe vitamin C overdose in pregnancy can cause miscarriage. Vitamin supplements are mostly designed for those who have a specific deficiency. Eat a range of healthy, FOOD that has undergone as little processing as possible. Only problem is you risk helping a farmer make a living rather than a Dr Google herbalist.
This is exactly the time to talk about nutrition and boosting the immune system naturally!
If we kept ourselves well nutritionally, and put research dollars into that, we wouldn't need pharmaceuticals that only keep us dependent and unhealthy and wouldn't get sick as often. Nutrition should be our first priority and pharmaceutical medicine our alternative or last resort. Let's put most research funding into nutrition and foods so that we can call them 'science', as pharmaceuticals enjoy but don't deserve.
The Big Herbal and Natural industry already has the money to do conduct that research. They are worth billions of dollars. How about you lobby them to provide actual data and proper research on the claims they make? Time they put their money where their mouth is.
Who isn’t trying to keep themselves well? If people actually have a nutritional deficiency it’s almost always due to their financial situation, a mental illness or a physical illness. Research funding into nutrition isn’t going to do anything to solve the issue of poverty.
As for science- yes absolutely, the wellness industry should do scientific trials the way the pharma companies do. Evidence based, long form trials with huge sample groups and peer reviewed reporting. And of course they will accept liability for misleading claims. When they start doing that I’m more than happy to accept that there’s a scientific basis for naming a new ‘superfood’ every 2 months.
Agree. The wellness industry: rakes in profit from the illness of others, without the accountability or scrutiny of the pharmacological industry.
