Miley Cyrus and fiance Liam Hemsworth are among Hollywood celebrities who have lost homes as deadly wildfires scorched California.
The 25-year-old confirmed on social media the couple’s $US2.5 million (AU$3.48 million) Malibu mansion was destroyed and the “love of her life”, Liam, had safely escaped with their many animals.
“Completely devastated by the fires affecting my community,” Miley wrote in a tweet.
“I am one of the lucky ones. My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely and that’s all that matters right now.
“My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family & friends stand strong.
“I am grateful for all I have left.”
The singer and actress thanked firefighters and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for their help in fighting the fires and made an urgent plea to fans to donate money to fire aid and disaster relief organisations.
Miley is in Africa shooting a movie and made frantic calls to her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, when news broke California had erupted in flames.
“As it unfolded Miley began calling, we talked it through and I told her, ‘Honey, prepare yourself for the worst’ and unfortunately worst did unfold,” Cyrus told LA TV station KTLA on Monday.
The coastal celebrity-filled coastal strip of Malibu was one of the worst hit with actor Gerard Butler, rock icon Neil Young, reality TV star Camille Grammer and musician Robin Thicke also losing homes.
“Returned to my house in Malibu after evacuating,” Gerard tweeted alongside a photo of his house.
Miley and Chris’ home is in Ramirez Canyon, an exclusive area of Malibu with multi-million dollar homes overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Billy Ray Cyrus added there were so many people in California worse off than his daughter, including the residents of Paradise in northern California where at least 31 people were killed and almost 7,000 homes and structures destroyed in what is the worst fire in the state’s history.
The so-called Camp Fire, California’s most destructive on record, has left at least 228 people missing as of early Monday, according to California’s Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea.
More than 224,000 people have been displaced by the fires.
