One comment in Miley Cyrus' latest interview speaks volumes about her famous family.

Miley Cyrus has made some curious comments about her famous father, Billy Ray Cyrus, amid the country singer filing for divorce from his wife of seven months, Firerose.

Appearing on David Letterman’s Netflix special My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, the 'Flowers' singer spoke candidly about her career and growing up under the spotlight, but it was her comments about her relationship with Billy Ray and her mum, Tish Cyrus, which have revealed a lot about the family's dynamic.

Listen to The Spill's hosts discuss Miley's secret message. Post continues after podcast.

In one segment, Miley claimed that she had inherited 'narcissism' from her dad. "I also inherited the narcissism from my father," she joked before revealing she couldn't remember which sibling moved with her to Los Angeles when she worked on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.

"I don’t know anything about my own siblings except for the part that I was doing. … I was moving to L.A., and that’s all I really knew."

When Letterman asked if she considered her dad to be her hero, she replied "I mean, honestly, my mum is my hero."

Miley went on to add that she had inherited some positive qualities from her father. "Um, so I think a lot of, like, his... perspective on reality and on life," she said but added that her father didn't raise her.

"More so than the way that I was raised... really my mum raised me."

But she did make some allowances for her dad, as she said he wasn't raised with the privileges she was afforded.

"My childhood – I mean we can go and talk about the hard times or the struggles... but I had food, I had love, I grew up in a beautiful big house, and my dad didn’t have that," she told Letterman.

"Without my dad, who I am as a person wouldn’t exist because my dad as a creative, and like, as an artist, and the way his brain works has always made me feel safer in my mind." Cyrus continued. "He also has a relationship and a foot on the ground to nature and to the real. And he always did, even when he was super famous."

The Cyrus family has been plagued by dysfunction in recent years. Billy Ray and Tish announced their divorce in 2022 but had reportedly been living separately for two years leading up to the split. Billy Ray first filed for divorce in 2010 and then Tish in 2013, but both times they managed to patch up their marriage.

The exes share five children together: Miley, Noah, Brandi, Trace and Braison. In the years since the divorce, reports have suggested that the kids have taken sides. When Tish tied the knot with Prison Break actor Dominic Purcell in August 2023, Noah and Braison did not attend.

Billy Ray got married to Australian singer Firerose in May 2024 but recently filed for divorce after just seven months of marriage. The 'Achy Breaky Heart' singer met Firerose as a teenager when she auditioned for Hannah Montana, the popular kids TV series starring himself and his daughter, Miley.

“I’m grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me," Miley said in the Netflix special.

"He’s almost, like, given me this map – there is a map of what to do and what not to do."

During the interview Miley Cyrus was incredibly guarded about how she spoke about her family, particularly her father who she is rumoured to have no current relationship. It speaks volumes about what could be going on behind the scenes.
