Cross Counter has stormed home in an incredible finish to win the 2018 Melbourne Cup.
The three-year-old gelding beat out Marmelo and Prince of Arran in the 24-horse race to claim victory in the in the race that stops the nation.
Trained by Englishman Charlie Appleby and ridden by Australian jockey Kerrin McAvoy, Cross Counter’s victory marks the first win by an English horse in the Melbourne Cup.
It also the first win for horse racing stable Godolphin, owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is worth an estimated $US18 biliion.
