Melbourne Cup 2013 - all the frocks & gossip

Well, that's another Melbourne Cup done and dusted. Did you back the winner?

Fiorente - the favourite - beat the bookies' curse and scored the winner's trophy, giving trainer Gai Waterhouse her first victory in the race.

More than 78,000 racegoers poured through the gates at Flemington by noon, ensuring a huge turn-out for the win.

The frocks trackside were suitably pervy (see below).

And the celebrity attendees provided the requisite dose of gossip.

SMH columnist Andrew Hornery: “Charlotte Dawson has managed to compose herself to install herself in one of the most prominent positions in the Lexus marquee. The veteran model had been admitted to St Vincents Emergency just 24 hours prior, tweeting an image of her drip as she was being treated for a “panic attack”. Dawson is sitting with former Labor power broker Graham Richardson and is clearly enjoying her time at the races despite the raised eyebrows her presence has caused for the marquee hosts.”); we fancy some frock oggling.

Among the international attendees were Dita Von Teese, model Kate Upton, Geri Halliwell (who bet $500 on the nose on Fiorente and is renting a house from Gai Waterhouse in Sydney) and our pick of the stars, Downton Abby's Allen Leech.

The actor, who plays former chaffeur Tom Branson on the show, enjoyed a few bets throughout the day.

"It would be rude to come all this way and not have a gamble," he told APN.

He was also enjoying visiting the home of the Cup, Melbourne: "I love Melbourne; it has a really good vibe. It's quite an Irish attitude, taking a Tuesday off. You know, all of a sudden it becomes a week off (laughs)."

But that's enough with the chatter, settle back with a glass of champers or a cuppa and take a browse through some of our favourite fashions on the field:
