As The Matildas' Mary Fowler hits the field at the Paris 2024 Olympics, there's another story capturing our attention — her relationship with NRL star Nathan Cleary.

Since August 2023, this sporting power couple has captured our hearts faster than Fowler can score a goal.

Who is Mary Fowler's boyfriend Nathan Cleary?

Born on November 14, 1997 (a Scorpio for all those astrology lovers out there) Nathan Cleary is also a sporting force to be reckoned with. As the Penrith Panthers' halfback, he's led his team to multiple NRL premierships and dominated in the State of Origin series.

At just 23, Cleary became the youngest captain to lead an NRL team to a premiership since 1987. His trophy cabinet is already bursting at the seams, with the Clive Churchill Medal in 2021 and the Dally M Medal in 2020 among his accolades.

Cleary's leadership skills and strategic mind have made him a favourite among footy fans.

Fowler and Cleary's relationship blossomed in August 2023.

Romance rumours began to surface after the pair were spotted on an ice cream date, with Cleary later sharing an Instagram roundup, captioning the post "that's life" with an ice cream emoji.

While they've kept things relatively low-key, their social media snaps give us just enough glimpses to keep us intrigued. Recently, they went on a romantic getaway together where they took plenty of photos showing the serene views and cosy campfires.

The pair are also regularly seen supporting one another's sporting endeavours. According to The Daily Mail, Cleary flew into Perth to watch Australia vs The Philippines on October 29, 2023. 

In December last year, Cleary referenced the pair's relationship on the GQ Awards red carpet in Sydney. When asked where Fowler was, he laughed, "I knew this was coming. She's busy."

In March this year during his off-season, Cleary also made the trip across to the UK to visit his girlfriend, who plays for Manchester City Women's Football Club.

From family teams to power couple dreams

Both Fowler and Cleary come from families where sport is practically in their DNA. Fowler's siblings have kicked it professionally, while Cleary's dad, Ivan, has gone from player to coach for the Penrith Panthers.

With this in mind, they've likely both experienced the unique challenges of growing up in the public eye and the pressure of carrying family legacies in their respective sports.
