'My best friend asked me to be her maid of honour. I walked out hours before the wedding.'

Being asked to be a maid of honour is, well, an honour. But taking on this role is certainly not for the fainthearted.

You're often required to do a lot of heavy lifting in the lead-up and on the day of the wedding. But it's all done with love because ultimately you want the bride to have the wedding of her dreams.

However, one maid of honour walked away from it all and dropped out of her friend's wedding on the big day. Kind of a shady move, right? Well, reserve judgement and read on.

One Reddit poster has taken to the AITA (Am I The Asshole) forum to share her nightmare story explaining why she walked away from her BFF's wedding at the 11th hour. It seems the honour of being a MOH quickly dissipated after she learned of a betrayal.

The woman begins her story by opening up about how she and her ex "John" (a fake name) had been together for four years when he suddenly broke up with her. The breakdown of their relationship had hit her hard as they had started talking about their future, which involved a wedding and kids.

She was at a loss and couldn't help but wonder why it had ended.

"I tried to figure out what went wrong, but he said it was 'personal' and that I should respect his space," she wrote.

Heartbroken, the woman leant on her best friend "Stacy" and Stacy's partner "Tom" for support during a difficult time.

"Stacy and her fiancé Tom were my rocks, letting me crash at their place and just being overwhelmingly supportive and loving," she wrote.

So when Stacy asked the poster to be her maid of honour at her upcoming wedding, it was a no-brainer and she excitedly accepted.

On the morning of the wedding, Tom asked the woman to meet him for breakfast early before the festivities started. Despite finding it a little bit odd, she obliged. They were friends in their own right, after all.

That's when Tom dropped a bombshell.

"Tom let me know that a few days prior, Stacy admitted to him that she had an affair with John, which was what lead to my breakup," the woman wrote. "He said that Stacy wanted to come clean to 'start their marriage fresh', and that he was forgiving her to move forward."

Stacy had had an affair with her best friend's boyfriend and then consoled her when he broke up with the woman. Ouch.

After Tom came clean about Stacy's affair, he told the poster he hoped that they could all now move on and continue with the wedding.

That... is not what happened.

"[He said] he had gone back and forth between telling me, and finally decided to spill the beans," the woman explained. "I guess he had expected me to forgive Stacy too because the affair was 'so long ago'. The opposite pretty much happened, and I just walked out on the wedding."

She felt so hurt by the betrayal, she didn't want to be a part of the wedding — and as a result, she said she caused a "huge mess" as she had organised most of the wedding on behalf of Stacy.

"I was basically running the whole show (Stacy made me do everything, so she didn't even know what was happening at certain times or who to call)," the woman wrote.

"Not only that, but everyone realised that the MOH wasn't there (she had headshots and bios of the party on her wedding page), and news of the affair eventually got out because her cousin knew John."

While many who commented on her story found her reasons for ditching the wedding totally understandable, the woman continued, saying that she is now copping a lot of backlash from her former friends.

"Stacy and Tom have both been slandering me online now, saying that I ruined their once in a lifetime moment," she wrote. "Some of their friends are on their side, saying that I should have handled the situation more privately, and at least stuck out the wedding since it was so last minute."

Given the dramatic turn of events, the woman feels like she is being made to feel like a horrible person despite being the one who was cheated on and betrayed by her best friend.

"I personally don't know what Tom expected, but either way I've been getting bombarded with texts and I heard that Stacy has been so upset she's had to take time off work, which does make me feel like an AH," she wrote.

"Especially since I've just been ignoring her calls."

After finishing her post asking if she was the a**hole in this situation, fellow Redditers threw in their two cents on the whole debacle.

One person said that the bride didn't really have a leg to stand on and she got what she deserved after behaving the way she did.

"The person you call your best friend went behind your back and betrayed you. The karma came right back to her like a boomerang," they wrote.

Another person said that the woman didn't owe Stacy anything, and that she was right to walk away from a situation that wasn't serving her.

"Tom is welcome to forgive Stacy, but doesn't mean you need to," they wrote. "Why would Stacy (or any mutual friends) ever expect you to continue a charade when she was actively involved in an awful time in your life? Seems like her support may have been out of guilt."

Another poster pointed out that Stacy and Tom may have gott4en off... kind of easy. The wedding day could've really been ruined if the MOH had gone public with the affair during the speech on the big day.

"You should ask them if they would prefer it if you had outed the affair during the MOH speech, because that might have been my instinct," she wrote. "Handling it the way that you did was pretty damn mature and gracious if you ask me."

While the woman might have had to deal with the loss of her ex, the realisation that her best friend betrayed her, and the backlash from some of their friends — at least she knows she stood up for herself at a difficult time.

And has a hoard of Redditers agreeing she did nothing wrong.
