Madonna is now officially a mother of six, instead of four.

Madonna has expanded her family by adopting four-year-old twin girls from Malawi.

The 58-year-old singer has been granted an adoption order for four-year-old twins Esther and Stella by the Malawi High Court.

Mlenga Mvula, a judicial spokesman, said: “I can confirm that Madonna has been granted an adoption order for two children.”

The star set up the charity Raising Malawi in the southern African nation in 2006, and she has already adopted two Malawian children - David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009.

The twins are being adopted from the Home of Hope orphanage in Mchinji, near the western border with Zambia, where David Banda once lived.

Madonna’s relationship with Malawi has not always been easy. The former Malawian president Joyce Banda accused her of demanding unending gratitude for her adoptions, but her successor Peter Mutharika said in 2014: “My government has always been grateful for the passion Madonna has for this country.”

As Mamamia previously reported, the biological grandmother of Madonna’s adopted daughter Mercy James is also desperate to see her granddaughter.

When Madonna adopted Mercy in 2009, she promised that she would not let her forget her African heritage. Mercy’s grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa, 73, says that Madonna has never brought Mercy to see her since the adoption.

“Madonna has not been in communication with me and I cannot understand why,” Chekechiwa told The Mirror.

“Why won’t she come to see me?”
