After qualifying fastest for the final of the 100m backstroke, Emily Seebohm finished second to 17-year-old American swimmer Missy Franklin. When she was interviewed after the race, she said: “I feel like I’ve disappointed my parents and my coach … it’s just really tough. It was hurting a lot and I don’t know what went wrong.’’
During interviews this morning Emily was visibly still upset that she didn’t quite manage to bring home the gold but had her mum by her side, supporting her. And just for the record. Emily, we say ‘bravo’. You won SILVER AT THE OLYMPICS GIRL – that is no small feat.
Liesel Jones finished fifth in the final of the 100m breaststroke. After the race, she said: “I’m pretty happy with fifth … My focus has totally changed at these Games. For me it was all about the changing of the guard and handing over to the younger swimmers.” Given the criticism that has been thrown at Jones during the past two weeks, she has done a phenomenal job at what was her fourth Olympic Games representing our country,
In other overnight Olympic news, Stephanie Rice and Alicia Coutts qualified for the 200m individual medley, Nick D’arcy failed to make the final of the 200m butterfly and teenage kayaker Jessica Fox qualified fourth for the final.
Three points down and 3.8 seconds to go. Opals player Belinda Snell had no choice but to shoot – from more than half way down the court. And the shot went in.
The 3-point shot managed to level the Opals with France and forced the match into overtime, but unfortunately the Opals were unable to comeback completely. They lost their second Olympic match 74-70.
3. The 16-year-old girl who swam faster than the world’s best man.
Yes, you read that one correctly. When 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Shiwen Ye won the 400m individual medley on Saturday, she not only beat the world record, she also swam the final 50m freestyle faster than American swimmer Ryan Lochte did when he won the men’s 400m medley event.
And that’s fast. Loche swam the final 50m freestyle in a time of 29.10sec. Ye swam it in 28.93secs.
But her time has raised questions of whether that speed is physically possible for someone so young. The executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association John Leonard has said: “Any time someone has looked like superwoman in the history of our sport they have later been found guilty of doping”.
Loche is one of many young Olympians at this year’s games. Take a look:

4. Australian boxer ordered not to wear the Aboriginal flag.
When indigenous Australian boxer Damien Hooper walked into his opening fight overnight, he wore a t-shirt with an Aboriginal flag printed on the front. Wearing the t-shirt goes against Australian team rules, which say athletes can only wear the official team uniform. So officials are warning him not to do it again. (Hooper won the fight 13-11)
The Australian team media spokesperson Mike Tancred said: “We will talk to Damien and counsel him against doing it again… He intends to apologise to (Australian team chef de mission) Nick Green for his actions but there is the potential for the IOC to look at this incident as a possible breach of the Olympic Charter and they could take action.”
