Love her or hate her, Kylie Minogue sure has managed to squeeze her way back onto the radar’s of Australians in the last couple of months.
Selected as the replacement judge for Delta Goodrem on The Voice Australia, Minogue now resides within the television screens of millions of Aussies every Monday night.
Though we’re used to seeing her pop-star side- immaculately well dressed, presented, and without a foot out of place- it’s rarer to see the more sensitive side to this Aussie icon.
Tonight, in an exclusive 60 Minutes interview with Karl Stefanovic, Minogue opened up about her love affair with INXS rockstar Michael Hutchence. She also spoke candidly about her past life on Neighbours and what it was like for a young girl, with an “inner bogan” in her, to take over the pop industry.
All while battling breast cancer, and rocking some seriously cool hot pants.
Here are our top 5 insights from tonight’s interview:
1. On her relationship with Michael Hutchence:
“Yes. I’d never met anyone like that, I really hadn’t, and I was . .
“I was like probably not very cool then, and he was über cool, and somehow we met in the middle. I love seeing pictures from then because he was just, he was so proud.
“It was great love and it was true heartbreak.
“He was just this kind of expansive all-encompassing love of life. And if you have such a strong love, and they’re not there, that’s somehow different to having a strong love for someone where you you’ve got the possibility to see them again or talk or, you know, share more experiences. So, I miss him just as much as anyone who was fortunate enough to share time with him.”
2. On the famous hot pants that cost less than a dollar at an op shop:
“My 50p hot pants stole the show, basically. I thought that they should just go out and do press afterwards because all I was asked about was like “The hot pants will be along soon and they can answer any question you have.”
3. On battling breast cancer at the age of 37:
“Oh boy, how did I do that? Someone had said to me at the time, you know, be a little bit selfish. It’s not in my nature to be selfish, but now is the time to do that. Let people take care of you. And that’s what I did.
“I know I have strength, but when you’re fighting something that where there’s a lot of unknown, it’s a mixture, a mixture of emotions and memories.
“It is years until you really get the all clear, and by the time my hair started growing back it was very exciting. It was like a miracle.”
4. What the other judges say about working with Kylie on The Voice:
RICKY MARTIN: “I mean, she’s always charming. She’s always fascinating to work with.”
JOEL MADDEN: “We’ve gotten very close. I love working with Kylie. She’s just the best, man. She does youguys proud!”
5. On what’s next:
“What is next? I keep thinking there’ll be a growth spurt, but I know that’s … I keep the faith. I don’t care that I’m 46 years old. And the rest, we will see, we will see Karl, but wherever I end up, I’ll send you a postcard.”

That hotpants story - or versions of it - sometimes the op shop, sometimes the garage sale - has been circulating since they were first in that music video. I personally think it was a flash of effective PR. I think they were put together on a Jenome especially for Kylie's clip and took on a life of their own, thus needing a backstory.
I think most women have their own Michael Hutchence!
I loved that she was so raw and unguarded. I'm a fan.
