A 47-year-old man has been handed a suspended sentence for manslaughter over the death of three-year-old Brisbane girl Kyhesha-Lee Joughin.
Christopher Arthur Neville Kent pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Supreme Court over the horrific death of the child, who was found dead at a Petrie unit in March 2013.
The court heard she was living at the unit with Kent and her father, Matthew Lee Williamson.
The court heard an autopsy found the child had been “physically and sexually assaulted over a period of time”.
She died from an injury sustained to her bowel and would have been in extreme pain before her death.
The court heard Kent was not responsible for the girl’s injuries but had not acted to save her life.
Justice Glenn Martin said Kent had less of a duty of care as he was not the child’s parent.
Justice Martin sentenced Kent to two years in jail, suspended from today.
Kent has already spent more than a year in custody.
