Kim Kardashian has produced a new documentary about mental illness.

The Kardashians represent many things — fame, money, influence and, let’s be honest here, a little bit of vanity. Ask people why they refuse to ‘keep up’ with this famous family and their answer will probably include the observation they “never do anything worthwhile”.

Well, fans now have a solid rebuttal for that because the undisputed Kween of the Kardashians, Kim, has just executive-produced #RedFlag — a documentary about mental illness.

The HLM show, which Kim worked on with a team of producers, examines how social media can be used to identify and assist young people struggling with mental illness. (Post continues after video.)

#RedFlag was Kim’s brainchild, she says the aim is to increase awareness and education about mental health.

“I am blessed to be surrounded by family and friends that are loving and nurturing but not everyone has that kind of support,” the 34-year-old said in a statement.

“Twenty five percent of adults in America will suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime, and many of them turn to social media to vent their depression, loneliness, and isolation.” (Post continues after gallery.)

The documentary follows the lives of two young people who suffer from mental illness and use social media to express themselves. One of them, a mother named Kelly, says in the promo: “I post all day on my social media, I just want to find other people that are bipolar like me.”

“We worked really hard to find people that did need help,” Kim explains in an interview.

“You can feel people’s pain through social media when they’re really open and honest, and it can be scary sometimes. You don’t want people to take it to a whole other level and hurt themselves, so we want people to get the help that they really deserve.”

#RedFlag premièred this week in time for Mental Health Month, which is May in the US, and one look at Kim's Twitter feed suggests she's happy with the final result. Nice one, Mrs Kardashian West.

In a strange coincidence (or was it?) Selfish, Kim's long-awaited book of selfies, also launched this week. Light and shade, people. That's why we love the Kardashians.
