Khloe Kardashian has published a deeply personal letter that reveals there is greater depth to her spiritual belief than one might think.
The piece which covers her childhood, her divorce, her father’s death and key moments of past relationships is an eye-opening insight into a woman you may have previously thought you knew.
The K-clan celebrity distributed the piece through Lena Dunham’s feminist newsletter ‘Lenny Letter’, fulfilling Dunham’s long-held wish to count her among their contributors.
Dunham introduced the letter with a confession of her own.
“Since we launched Lenny in September 2015, we have dreamed of getting Ms. Khloé Kardashian to write for us,” Dunham said.
“I am more likely to check her app than I am to take my birth control, and that’s a fact.”
The letter begins with a disclaimer that demonstrates the Kardashian’s self-awareness of not just her own position within the media but her family’s too.
“When you think Kardashian, devout probably isn’t the first thing that crosses your mind,” she said.
Khloe goes on to reveal a childhood spent in and out of church, where introductions to other faiths were often guided by her late father.
“At the time, I didn’t understand the difference between Catholics and Christians — I didn’t understand why I was being told I couldn’t take Communion. I just started crying,” she said.
“My dad explained it to me by telling me I was dedicated to the Lord and that was all that mattered.”
This teaching seems to have stayed with the young woman as her later relationship with a man of Muslim faith taught her about the fasting involved with Ramadan.
It is then revealed she even went so far as to observe Ramadan alongside her partner as a demonstration of her own supportive devotion.
“You fast from sunrise to sunset to commemorate the first time the Quran was revealed to Muhammad, and I practiced it with him to be supportive,” she said.
This idea of interweaving faith into her relationships continues as she reveals her difficulty in undergoing a divorce when she truly didn’t believe in the practice.
“At my core, I don’t believe in divorce, but I came to a point in my marriage where I had to make the choice to take care of my own mental and emotional well-being in order to protect myself and my happiness,” she said.
But it is the segments that discuss her father's death that prove the most touching.
Khloe reveals how faith helped her overcome accepting not only his death but the difficult moments they shared in the hours before he died.
"When he was dying, he wasn't himself. He was talking like a baby; it wasn't him," she said.
Her faith allowed her to process his death as not something that could be blamed but as something that could be accepted.
Khloe found solace in books that explained one's spirit left the body before they died. This belief allowed her to process her father's uncharacteristic behaviour as a reflection not of him but of the process of death.
The Kardashian may be notorious for her glam squad, her cocktails and her fleeting relationships but there is more to Khloe Kardashian and it's about time we saw it.
